The Uyghurs from East Turkistan

In the center of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the northern-west part of China, the land of Xinjiang is a least populated province whereas it covers near to a sixth of the country's territory. Having resisted while in centuries the chinese domination, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, or Old East Turkistan, fell under the Chinese Han domination in 1949. From then, its population is mostly Uyghurs and Turkic - speaking System.

Muslim primarily, the Uyghurs have a deep religious identity which usually, in specific, allowed them to protect a strong big difference towards the Chinese invader. Indeed, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a brilliant civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

During their own background, the Uyghurs successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before finally changing to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., thus beginning the way to the Islamization of the complete Central Asia.

Under the effect of the beliefs which they taken on, Uyghur People used successively, and at times in a competing way, a large number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

The entrance of Islam was a great change mainly because it was followed by the absorption of the Uyghur areas in the immense Turkic and Muslim Empire. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used presently.

If their own writing, their language and their religion mark a real big difference with the culture of Chinese Han, Uyghur People also are different from their characteristic, so aspect of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features directing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek origins of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only 8 million inhabitants - a trifle for this huge region. Thus, Uyghur people are now part of the 56 ethnic minority groups having been recognized in an official way by China.

This particular law will allow these people a few privileges in a country exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Thus, Uyghur families escape the "single child policy" and their language is recognized as the second official language in Xinjiang.

The integration of the Uyghur people and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, appears quite illusory. The presence of all natural sources in Xinjiang, and its area with countries recognized as sensitive, clearly urged the government to speed up the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the larger responsibility work opportunities.

In response to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more flexibility, but mainly the recognition of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in location Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur peoples population continues today to proudly hold their identification and their culture , even though they become a minority on their own territory.

People Making Money Net

One of my many frustrations of working in Washington is dealing with perpetual-motion-machine assertions. The classic example is Keynesian economics, which is based on the notion that you magically create additional economic activity by having the government spend money instead of allowing the private sector to decide how it gets spent (in an especially bizarre display of this thinking, Nancy Pelosi actually said that subsidizing unemployment was the best way to create jobs).

Another example of this backwards analysis can be found in the debate over the IRS budget. The President is resisting a GOP proposal to modestly trim the IRS’s gargantuan $12.5 billion budget and his argument is that we should actually boost funding for the tax collection bureaucracy since that will mean more IRS agents squeezing more money out of more taxpayers.

Here are some excerpts from an Associated Press report about the controversy.

Every dollar the Internal Revenue Service spends for audits, liens and seizing property from tax cheats brings in more than $10, a rate of return so good the Obama administration wants to boost the agency’s budget.House Republicans, seeing the heavy hand of a too-big government, beg to differ. They’ve already voted to cut the IRS budget by $600 million this year and want bigger cuts in 2012. …IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman told the committee Tuesday that the $600 million cut in this year’s budget would result in the IRS collecting $4 billion less through tax enforcement programs. The Democrat-controlled Senate is unlikely to pass a budget cut that big. But given the political climate on Capitol Hill, Obama’s plan to increase IRS spending is unlikely to pass, either. Obama has already increased the IRS budget by 10 percent since he took office, to nearly $12.5 billion. The president’s budget proposal for 2012 would increase IRS spending by an additional 9 percent — adding 5,100 employees. …Obama’s 2012 budget proposal for the IRS includes $473 million and 1,269 new positions to start implementing the health care law.

Unlike Keynesian economics, there actually is some truth to Obama’s position. The fantasy estimate of $10 of new revenue for every $1 spent on additional bureaucrats is clearly ludicrous, but it is equally obvious that many Americans would send less money to Washington if they didn’t have to worry about a coercive and powerful tax-collection bureaucracy that had the power to throw them in jail.

This is an empirical question, at least with regards to the narrow issue of whether more IRS agents “pay for themselves” by shaking down sufficient numbers of taxpayers. Reducing the number of IRS bureaucrats by 90 percent, from about 100,000 to 10,000, for instance, surely would be a net loss to the government since the money saved on IRS compensation would be trivial compared to the loss of tax revenue.

But that doesn’t mean that a reduction of 10,000 or 20,000 also would lead to a net loss. And it certainly does not mean that adding 10,000 or 20,000 more IRS agents will result in enough new revenue to compensate for the salaries and benefits of a bigger bureaucracy. Even left-wing economists presumably understand the concept of diminishing returns.

But let’s assume that the White House is correct and that more IRS agents would be a net plus from the government’s perspective. The Administration would like us to reflexively endorse a bigger and more aggressive IRS, but public policy should not be based on what is a “net plus” for the government.

There are two ways to promote better tax compliance. The Obama approach, as we’ve read above, is to expand the size and power of the IRS. Up to a point, this policy can be “successful” in extracting additional money from the productive sector of the economy.

The alternative approach, by contrast, seeks better compliance by lowering tax rates and reforming/simplifying tax systems. This course of action boosts compliance by making evasion and avoidance less attractive. People are much less likely to cheat if the government isn’t being too greedy, and they’re also more likely to comply if they think there is less waste, fraud, corruption, and favoritism in the tax code.

Let’s now put this discussion in context. Obama wants more IRS agents in large part to enforce his new scheme for government-run healthcare. Yet that’s a perfect example of what I modestly call Mitchell’s Law – politicians doing one bad thing (expanding the IRS) only because they did another bad thing (enacting a health care bill that made the tax code even more convoluted and punitive).

So instead of making the IRS bigger in response to a bad healthcare law, why not repeal that bad law and shrink the size of the IRS? Even better, why not junk the entire tax code so we can replace the IRS with a system that is honest and fair?

And if these big steps are not immediately feasible, at least cut the IRS budget so that awful laws are enforced in a less destructive manner.

This Center for Freedom and Prosperity video has additional details about the national nightmare we call the IRS.

Damn. Can't sleep. I must share a true story:

During my fertile years, I made a point of having my annual PAP smear, pelvic and breast exams, and getting my pills refilled, at a local women's clinic which also provided abortions. I thought they needed my support.

Every weekday morning, women seeking access to the clinic's driveway had to pass a group of 5-10 dedicated sidewalk protesters, mostly retirees and mostly Catholic, who stood quietly by, held up signs, and prayed their Rosaries. No big deal.

Free speech, free assembly, and they stayed on the public side of the property line. Occasionally one of the group led the Rosary with a megaphone. Again, free speech. Stressful and annoying to listen to for hours on end, but it's their right.

But the real circus was on Saturday mornings, when local fundamentalist churches sometimes brought out protesters by the busloads. They were well-armed with megaphones and powerful lungs, and shrieked at women entering the driveway: "DON'T KILL YOUR BABY." They sometimes attempted to block the driveway and used cameras to intimidate women entering the clinic. Women had to run a formidable gauntlet just to enter. So the clinic had escort volunteers and a security guard for the weekends.

Anyway, women would go there for all sorts of reasons: abortions, birth control pills, pelvic exams. But of course it was assumed by the Conservanazirepubliscum that each and every woman was cheerfully marching in there to terminate her pregnancy, so they shouted at women on a regular basis: "DON'T KILL YOUR BABY!"

But one Saturday morning I realized that they were only shouting at PARTICULAR women.

I pulled in for my exam appointment and to have my pills refilled. I drove past the screamers, drove up the driveway and into the large parking lot in the rear, safely surrounded by private property.

A moment later, another, younger woman pulled into the adjacent parking, space: she was attractive, tall, slender, lovely ... and African- American. While I gathered my things, she got out of her car. I called out, "be careful, those guys are whacked. Be sure to lock your car." She did so, and walked toward the clinic's entrance. I could hear the crowd singing "Jesus Loves the Little Children," but I noticed something -- they did not scream directly at her. In fact, they glanced at her and completely ignored her. She entered, and the door closed behind her.

I was about 20 steps behind this young woman. But as my WHITE baby-makin' hips approached the door, the screams began in earnest: "DON'T KILL YOUR BABY! DON'T KILL YOUR BABY! PLEASE COME TALK TO US! WE'LL ADOPT YOUR CHILD!"

I had started to open the clinic door, but my blood boiled. I let go of the door, and I marched to the foot of the driveway. I went nose-to-nose (just on the clinic's side of the property line) with the Alpha Screamer. I made a theatrical gesture of clearing out my ears, and snarled, as I pointed behind me: "I didn't hear you say that to the woman who entered before me! Or did I have wax in my ears and I missed that?"

He did not respond, but resumed yelling "PLEASE DON'T KILL YOUR BABY! WE HAVE WET MOTHERS! WE CAN ADOPT!"

This time I shouted back: "You didn't answer my question! WHY DIDN'T YOU URGE THAT BLACK WOMAN NOT TO HAVE AN ABORTION? WHY DIDN'T YOU OFFER TO ADOPT IT? YOU DON'T WANT BLACK BABIES, DO YOU?"

I was again ignored, and screamed at not to kill MY imaginary baby.

So I said, "What if I wanted to keep a baby? What if I didn't want to give it up for adoption? Would you help me then? Would you help pay my bills? And help me finish college?"

Again, I received no answer, just more shouting.

I whirled on my heel, flipped them all a double-handed bird, and marched into the clinic. As I approached, I noticed a couple of people peeking out the door.

In a much, much calmer voice, I asked the packed waiting room (about 50/50 black and white): "How many of you African-American women were screamed at not to have an abortion?"

Not a single hand went up.

Then I said, "How many of you white women got screamed at?"

EVERY HAND went up.

I said, "Fucking racists. They want white babies, and they want us to GIVE them to them to brainwash. They don't care what happens to black women or black babies." Then I sat down.

This spurred a discussion about the venomous sexism and blatant, undisguised, shameless racism all rolled into one big, stinking shitpile of hatred and herded into church busses. The KKK in Jesus T-shirts. Two busloads of 'em. EVERY SATURDAY. Most of the women there were in tears. One of their male companions bolted out the door to give the screamers a piece of HIS mind.

I started volunteering as a clinic escort after that -- I'd been through non-violence training, but I was also belted in a martial art and not afraid to use it to defend myself or another if I absolutely had to.

When Operation Rescue came to town, the same observations were made by all clinic volunteers: minority women did NOT get yelled at to give up their precious bundles of joy for adoption. But EVERY white woman was body-blocked and otherwise interfered with as she attempted to enter the clinic. All of us clinic defenders came away bruised simply by body-block contact with those lunatics (the idea is to surround the woman and get her safely inside). I had bruises even though I had worn motorcycle leathers for the job.

My Granny used to call such hypocrisy, "The Devil in a Sunday hat." Wise words, those.

So...this throws another bag of Ugly into the fray. Sexism and racism. A desire for total control over women, and for a permanent underclass. It makes me so sick I can't sleep. Didn't get any sleep last night either.

Y'all, "The Handmaid's Tale" really is coming if we al don't get off our butts and DO something.

Online Money Making Opportunities

I love these little white board demos that Austan Goolsbee does on a fairly regular basis. It's such a nice, sane, intelligent version, especially in comparison to some of the bat-$#!% crazy ones we're forced to watch while monitoring Fox News.

In this one, Goolsbee talks up the National Wireless Initiative. I don't know if our generally myopic world view makes the fact that we have such slow internet speeds (compared to other countries) something that is well-known. I suspect not.

But the Obama administration does want to address that and extending internet connectivity to far more people in the hopes of stimulating job growth and thereby, the economy:

As the President explained today, his plan would expand wireless coverage to 98% of Americans, while reducing the deficit by nearly $10 billion by making more government spectrum available:

For our families and our businesses, high-speed wireless service, that’s the next train station; it’s the next off-ramp. It’s how we’ll spark new innovation, new investment, new jobs.

And you know this here in Northern Michigan. That’s why I showed up, in addition to it being pretty and people being nice. (Laughter and applause.) For decades now, this university has given a new laptop to every incoming student. Wi-Fi stretched across campus. But if you lived off-campus, like most students and teachers here, you were largely out of luck. Broadband was often too expensive to afford. And if you lived a bit further out of town, you were completely out of luck, because broadband providers, they often won’t build networks where it’s not profitable, just like they wouldn’t build electrical lines where it wasn’t profitable.

So this university tried something new. You partnered with various companies to build a high-speed, next-generation wireless network. And you managed to install it with six people in only four days without raising tuition. Good job. Good job, Mr. President. (Applause.) By the way, if you give me the name of these six people -- (laughter) -- there’s a whole bunch of stuff in Washington I’d like to see done in four days with six people. (Laughter.)

So today, this is one of America’s most connected universities, and enrollment is near the highest it’s been in 30 years.

And what’s more -- and this is what makes this special -- you told nearby towns that if they allowed you to retrofit their towers with new equipment to expand your network, then their schools, their first responders, their city governments could use it too. And as a result, police officers can access crime databases in their cars. And firefighters can download blueprints on the way to a burning building. And public works officials can save money by monitoring pumps and equipment remotely.

And you’ve created new online learning opportunities for K-12 students as far as 30 miles away, some of whom -- (applause) -- some of whom can’t always make it to school in a place that averages 200 inches of snow a year. (Laughter and applause.) Now, some of these students don’t appreciate the end of school [snow] days. I know Malia and Sasha get really excited about school [snow] days. Of course, in Washington things shut down when there’s an inch of snow. (Laughter.) But this technology is giving them more opportunity. It’s good for their education, it’s good for our economy. In fact, I just came from a demonstration of online learning in action. We were with Professor Lubig and he had plugged in Negaunee High School -- (applause) -- and Powell Township School in Big Bay. (Applause.) So I felt like the guy in Star Trek. I was being beamed around -- (laughter) -- across the Upper Peninsula here. But it was remarkable to see the possibilities for these young people who are able to, let’s say, do a chemistry experiment, and they can compare the results with kids in Boston.

Or if there’s some learning tool or material they don’t have immediately accessible in their school, they can connect here to the university, and they’re able to tap into it.

It’s opening up an entire world to them. And one of the young people who I was talking to, he talked about foreign policy and what we were seeing in places like Egypt. And he said, what’s amazing especially for us is that now we have a window to the entire world, and we can start understanding other cultures and other places in ways that we could never do without this technology.

The new co-presidents of Walt Disney Co.'s digital media group used the platform of the company's investor conference in Anaheim on Thursday to say what Wall Street has been longing to hear: that the money-losing division will achieve profitability in 2013.

John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive Media Group, said the division made significant layoffs in January and plans an additional 25% cut in operational overhead "in our march to profitability." No details on timing were offered.

"In the last 90 days, we've focused on getting the right team and scaling the team to where the business is today," Pleasants said, adding that the earlier wave of job reductions had already "taken millions of overhead out of the Interactive media group."

Pleasants and Co-President Jimmy Pitaro talked about refocusing the business to take advantage of new opportunities online and on mobile devices  -- a theme Disney Chief Executive Robert A. Iger has underscored in earnings calls with investors.

The interactive group will begin shifting resources away from developing games for the mature console market, reducing spending by 50% over the next four years, Pleasants said. "That does not mean we won't be making boxed product," he hastened to add, noting the popularity of the Epic Mickey title released late last year.

Pleasants, who oversees games and social media within the division, talked about better capitalizing on opportunities -- not only on emerging technological platforms, but in burgeoning international markets. He said the division will narrow its focus to "four to six major franchises," creating content to take advantage of growth areas, while experimenting with business models -- from free to subscription to micro-transactions, in which players pay modest sums to enhance their online experience.

The group aspires to create its own world-class character franchises that can flow to other parts of the entertainment giant's businesses, much as Pixar Animation's "Toy Story" characters or Marvel Entertainment's superheroes fuel merchandise sales.

One such home-grown franchise Pleasants highlighted is Club Penguin, an online world for children that has grown by 400% in the last three years.

Pitaro, who has oversight of the Disney.com portal and a collection of websites for mothers and families, talked about creating a more personal experience that's shaped by a user's interests.

"When we deliver the right content to the right user at the right time," Pitaro said, "we'll grow reach and engagement and have a more powerful platform to surface the fantastic content we have across our company,"

Inspite of unions’ very long hatred of Scott Walker, the new governor is moving to tackle both the signs or symptoms for the condition plus the ailment itself-the public-sector union scheme which has molested Wisconsin’s taxpayers and their youngsters by gaming the procedure. Unions like Wisconsin’s teachers’ union [WEAC] (which was Wisconsin’s biggest-spending lobby in 2009) have already been extraordinarily adept at repairing the system because of paying millions to elect politicians who, in turn, reward the unions on the expense from the taxpayers.

the Wisconsin fight, when in comparison to private-sector negotiations is about: one) the Scope of Bargaining, two) Union “Income” Security [Right-to-Work vs. Compelled Dues], three) whether or not Wisconsin may want to be the unions’ dues collection company [payroll deduction of dues], and four) whether public-sector unions need to be ‘recertified’ by keeping elections any yr.

Make Making Money

On Monday night, I watched my foremost, The Previous Phrase host Lawrence O’Donnell.
Even while O’Donnell laudably experimented with to emphasis the audience’s awareness onand hopefully previous, Charlie Sheen trainwreck interview, courtesy of the tragic undertow that threatens to pull Sheen under for good, I used to be overtaken, not from the pulling around the thread, as well as voracious audience he serves. It did not make me sad, it crafted me angry.

In relation to celebrities, we will be considered a heartless region, basking within their misfortunes like nude sunbathers at Schadenfreude Beach. The impulse is understandable, to some diploma. It might be grating to pay attention to complaints from consumers who have fun with privileges that many of us can not even just imagine. Should you can not muster up some compassion for Charlie Sheen, who may make alot more money to get a day’s operate than the majority of us will make in a decade’s time, I guess I can not blame you.

Together with the fast tempo of events on the internet in addition to the specifics revolution sparked from the World wide web, it’s really hassle-free for your technology market to feel it is special: continuously breaking new ground and doing issues that nobody has actually executed earlier than.

But you can get other kinds of online business which have already undergone several of the identical radical shifts, and have just as excellent a stake in the long run.

Consider healthcare, as an example.

We commonly imagine of it as a vast, lumbering beast, but in reality, medication has undergone a sequence of revolutions with the previous 200 years that happen to be at the least equal to these we see in technological know-how and advice.

Less understandable, but still within the norms of human nature, will be the impulse to rubberneck, to slow down and look into the carnage of Charlie spectacle of Sheen’s unraveling, but from the blithe interviewer Sheen’s daily life as we pass it during the appropriate lane of our every day lives. To be truthful, it could be tough for many people to discern the variation amongst a run-of-the-mill interest whore, and an honest-to-goodness, circling the drain tragedy-to-be. On its very own merits, a quote like “I Am On the Drug. It is Labeled as Charlie Sheen” is sheer genius, and we cannot all be anticipated to consider the complete measure of someone’s daily life each time we hear a little something humorous.

Rapidly ahead to 2011 and I am looking to take a look at indicates of getting a bit more business-like about my hobbies (generally songs). From the end of January I had manned up and commenced to promote my blogs. I had made various numerous blogs, which have been contributed to by colleagues and colleagues. I promoted these activities by means of Facebook and Twitter.

Second: the small abomination that the Gang of 5 around the Supream Court gave us a yr or so ago (Citizens Inebriated) essentially features a touch bouncing betty of its individual that may extremely nicely go off while in the faces of Govs Wanker, Sacitch, Krysty, and J.O. Daniels. Due to the fact this ruling prolonged the principle of “personhood” to both businesses and unions, to experiment with to deny them any suitable to operate in the legal framework that they were organized underneath deprives these “persons” of your freedoms of speech, association and motion. Which implies (when again, quoting law school skilled friends and family) that either the courts have to uphold these rights for the unions (as particular person “persons” as assured through the Federal (and most state) constitutions, or they've to declare that these attempts at stripping or limiting union rights should apply to important corporations, also.

Drought denial's tougher to pull off than climate denial.Photo: Luke RobinsonWhere and how will climate change first affect large numbers of American voters? Answering that question may be crucial to the global efforts to protect the Earth's climate. The tsunami of stupidity and science denial that has washed over Washington, D.C., won't be held back by earnest calculations of long-run risks, or by the potential inundation of remote island
nations, or by the news that polar bears and other iconic species are endangered.

While climate change may seem remote, the water crisis in the Southwest is all too immediate. Recent years of drought have reached critical levels, threatening to curtail agriculture and even the normal patterns of urban life throughout the region. Even if today's climate remained
unchanged, water use in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah would more than double over the next century, just from population and income growth.

In a recent study, Elizabeth Stanton and I show that the changing climate will make a bad situation worse, increasing the Southwest's water consumption by an additional one-third of today's level of use. There is simply no way to get that much water; the region's rivers and rainfall aren't going to grow. Ocean desalination is expensive, energy-intensive, and environmentally controversial. Groundwater, which makes up the water deficit today, is bound to run out at some point; it is being used far beyond its recharge rates in California and Arizona, and probably elsewhere as well. There are two different estimates of California's current groundwater reserves; the state would need three times the more optimistic estimate in order to make it through the next century.

Solving the water crisis will require reductions in water use. Nevada and Utah are the top two states in per capita residential water use today. Extensive conservation and efficiency measures will be needed, reshaping urban water use, improving irrigation methods, and cutting back on the region's lowest-value crops, which are worth less than the water used to grow them.

It gets much harder to solve the water crisis when it gets hotter: We found that climate change could add as much as $1 trillion to the costs of water scarcity for the five Southwestern states over the next century. As Americans start to experience mounting costs of climate change in this and other areas, spending money to reduce carbon emissions will look like a bargain
by comparison.

So here's a message from planet Earth to our newly elected congressional "leaders." You've made it clear that you're not planning to protect the climate because of what's happening to polar bears, or the islands that are sinking beneath the waves, or even because you care about the lives of your great-grandchildren. But you've got to take action anyway; controlling climate
change is crucial if you want people to have reliable water supplies in the Southwest. This isn't the only way that you'll feel the impacts of climate change in years to come -- but it could be the first big one.

Making Money on Ebay

The President has recently announced a new plan to free up huge chunks of the wireless spectrum, increase the national coverage of 4G networks, and install a wireless public safety network. These are ambitious goals being set by the administration, perhaps the most being the 4G investment which the President has pledged will cover 98% of Americans.

To make this all work, the White House is planning to raise $27 billion in spectrum auctions, and then turning that money around to fund the investment in these areas:

  • $5 billion to bring 4G internet connections to rural America

  • $3 billion for 4G research and development to coincide with the construction

  • $10.7 billion for the wireless public safety network, which was called for years ago by the 9/11 commission

  • $9.6 billion for budget deficit reduction

The push behind this investment invites comparison to the past efforts to bring telephone communication and highway travel to all corners of America, and the administration has framed it’s arguments in support of the investment in the same light. From Networkworld:

“America’s businesses are building out 4G networks to much of the nation,” the White House said in a statement. “Nevertheless, absent additional government investment, millions of Americans will not be able to participate in the 4G revolution. This investment will … extend access from the almost 95 percent of Americans who have 3G wireless services today to at least 98 percent of all Americans gaining access to state-of-the-art 4G high-speed wireless services within five years.”

Commentators have noted, however, that the entire plan hinges on the money brought in from auctions. As any eBay patron can tell you, those don’t always work out how you want. But the emphasis on bringing Internet connectivity (and public safety) to the nation as a whole, is a worthy one. Keep in mind, this isn’t so much about 4G as it is bringing the Internet to mostly poor, isolated, outlying communities. Hopefully this initiative, however it really pans out, will give every American a more equal footing in the burgeoning information economy. Perhaps it will be little things like someone making some extra money on Etsy, or bigger things like a farmer finding a better price for his crop.

Either way, it will bring us a step closer to all being united, as as a people, underneath that glorious community that truly identifies this country: Facebook. I mean, uh, the American dream.

Travis Salisbury was an Industrial Designer who worked for various government agencies before his retirement in 1977. In the late 1950's, Salisbury received an honorary degree in Design from the Montana Institute, and later took a job as director of design for the Montana State Legislature. This was an honorary position i.e. he didn't get paid. His main goal as a designer was to "help people get along and have fun while doing it." He organized a huge number of "supper days" events where opposing politicians would cook each others favorite meal and then eat them together. This helped Montana greatly. In 1961 he designed Chair #406 (named after Helena's area code). This chair looked completely normal except for one small feature -- a V-shape under one of the legs.

The reason for this "V" was to allow a game to be played with multiple chairs. People would play by hitting a ball through the "V" with some sort of mallet. Salisbury wanted people to be able to blow off steam in-between sessions. The "V" was large enough to let a croquet ball pass. All of the #406 chairs have since been sold off or scrapped -- people got too caught up in the game and it became a distraction.

After multiple years of writing proposals to the U.S. mint, Salisbury finally hit the big time in 1965 with his Average Citizen Quarter Program (or ACQP). The idea was simple: put an average citizen on a quarter. For a year, applications were scoured over until Randy Young, a steelworker from Pittsburgh, was selected. The coins were minted in 1967. Less than two months after the coins were minted, Randy Young was arrested for armed robbery -- the coins became known as "Jailbird Quarters." The Mint immediately stopped production of the coins, and the ones that existed were given an acid treatment to hide their features and to shame both Salisbury and Young.

After the public disgrace of the Jailbird Quarters, Salisbury moved to New Jersey and began to write textbooks for elementary school students. The only one of his books that made it very far was Learn to Control Your Machine. The art on the cover was a drawing that Salisbury's uncle drew of Travis at age ten.

The text of the book was simply "Learn to control your machine" over and over again, much like in the movie The Shining. At least five times per page there was a spelling error, 500 errors in the book. Students were graded on the amount of errors that they could find. Salisbury made sure that there were at least 100 variations of the book so that the students couldn't cheat. Some students were actually helped by the book, others were scarred for much of their lives.

After finally making money with his book, Salisbury went back out west to Montana, and got his honorary Design Director position back. This was 1973. After noticing that many of the politicians were making embarrassing and even incriminating doodles in their notebooks, Salisbury made them a custom notebook that would solve the problem. They would have the usual-sized ruled paper, but there would be a bigger column left near the binding when they tore off pages. This notebook had an area for doodles and a doodle book that the politicians could keep for later once all of the pages had been ripped off. A doodle book from the Montana State Legislature recently sold on eBay for $1000.

Salisbury worked four more years in Montana and retired in 1977. Some say that he was a pioneer and others say that he severely hurt the chances of other designers with dreams of working in government. Salisbury still lives in Montana where he's working on a new book about how the Jailbird Quarter fiasco was planned called Randy Young is Innocent.
