Making Money Marketing

Affiliate marketing is easy once you find the tactics that work for you. The time it takes to become a master depends upon your learning abilities and also your problem solving abilities. There are no rules carved in stone. Everything changes very fast, so you need to change your strategies, too, every day. One method that was extremely great two years ago and you read about it in an e-book might not work today, or might work differently.

The pitfall of most e-books is that they are only listing the general processes and don't give you a step-by-step guide to affiliate marketing. Since there are literally hundreds of tactics to be successful, it would be a very long book to cover every single method. That's why those so-called gurus are only writing about their favorite methods, which would possibly not be the methods that you can utilize the same way.

Not every method will bring in the same results, so you will need testing. You must choose one that is the most appropriate for your personality, and abilities, too. Loads of people find some traffic generation techniques boring or too complicated. That is why about 90% of people starting with Adwords will fail, because they don't like testing and analyzing the keywords. If you are this kind of person, don't even go there, or you will end up losing money instead of making affiliate revenue. Although, if you are a person who loves sharing and communicates easily, social networking would be your best method.

Prior to spending much money on ads, it is always useful to test an offer on free traffic. I started to apply this rule long ago and it has already saved me a lot of money. If I am sending out a free solo e-mail for my list, for example, and it turns out to be a success, I might consider buying e-zine advertising and advertise that way. But if not, I can still do split-test campaigns, therefore maximize conversions prior to paying for traffic.

Not making money as a YouTube partner? Here are some tips from YouTube itself

YouTube hosted a live event today to help partners get the most out of their YouTube revenue.

Phil Farhi of YouTube, began the event by telling partners about a few of the new initiatives that YouTube is working on, to help make partners as successful as possible. He started by bringing us through the history of advertising on YouTube.

Phil mentioned that just 3 short years ago, YouTube began using in-video and overlay ads, the first step in monetizing videos. And following the first format of ads, YouTube brought Ad Sense ads, enabling smaller advertisers/customers to get on board, allowing YouTube to capture a broader range of advertisers.

Next came in-Stream Ads (mid and pre-roll ads), a format that was launched about two years ago. YouTube said this has been popular because advertisers will pay more for ads that are similar to the format on TV. At almost the same time, promoted ads were introduced and it was proven to drive traffic to videos that were featured using the ‘promoted video’ format.

A few months ago, a new ad format for partners called TrueView was rolled-out. This format lets users watching a video skip the ad after five seconds. An ad format that YouTube says is less interruptive and doesn’t risk annoying your audience because it gives them the chance to hit stop.

Phil asked the question “ What makes a movie a successful?” Using the movie industry as an analogy, he went on to explain that there are many factors that come into play that make up the overall picture; ticket prices, seats filled, distribution etc. It’s the same with YouTube as he pointed out. Partners shouldn’t look at one aspect such as RPM (revenue per thousand page views) or CPM (cost per thousand, as an example $1 or $5 per thousand views), they should look at everything including geography.

A few points to take away

Good partners focus on overall revenue and aren’t fixated on “ticket price”. They also work hard at building a strong audience as well as trying to increase views. Good partners look at geography, RPM and CPM.

Bad partners look at the wrong metrics and don’t build up their audience. Partners who only focus on RPM might think everything is fine however, it’s critical that users concentrate on CPM as well and continue to build audience loyalty.

YouTube says advertisers are creating content that competes with user content, and millions of users are watching advertisements on the site. Think about the popularity of Superbowl ads.

Keep experimenting! Compare ad formats by type and geography and play around with different scenarios. Try enabling ads after your loyal audience has seen them or try it in reverse. Play with different recipes and see what happens when ad formats are enabled/disabled. There is a wide variety of ways to make revenue.

Take a good look at revenue break downs and compare formats; True View, in-Stream, etc.

Better reporting for ad formats coming soon. YouTube admits that partners don’t have the best reporting feature right now.

YouTube will be adding an option for partners to opt-in to just TrueView Ads without needing to be signed up with other formats.

Ensure the metadata on videos have the correct information and enough words to help YouTube’s algorithm bring the best targeted ads to your videos

Take a moment and open a new tab on your web-browser. Open it up to your favorite search engine and do a simple search for "make money online." There's a 100% chance you will see advertisements for companies that give very vague descriptions with promises of making huge sums of money without any mention of work. Let's face it, when trying to make money on the internet, 90% of the systems out there are crap. There are no easy ways to make large sums of money on the internet, it takes hard work, dedication, and a little bit of knowledge, just like every real job you've ever had. Let's look at the different ways there are to "make money online."

Scams - When you try to learn about making money online, you will find yourself visiting dozens of different pages with erroneous claims about how you can make thousands of dollars every week, just by following their proven system. Of course they don't tell you what their proven system is or how it is supposed to make money. If you see one of these, just don't bother. Their claims are bogus in almost nearly every case, don't waste your time, no matter how attractive they look.

Get Paid To Take Surveys - You can actually make a bit of money here and there by taking surveys on the internet. There is a lot of misinformation about how much money you will make in hopes that whoever is trying to sell you on the idea will be able to refer you to the website and make some sort of commission. You will have to take a lot of qualification surveys, and if you meet the qualifications, then you can make $10 or so an hour to take a survey, but you definitely won't get rich off it and probably won't get more than a survey a week.

Blogging - Blogging works well for some people, but this takes tons of dedication and research. A lot of people start blogging hoping for some sort of great return from advertising, but the reality is that it takes work, a lot of work. In my first month of blogging, I probably put 40 hours of work into the website and only ended up making $30.00. I know I'm worked for peanuts, but it was fun, and I know that if I stay dedicated to it, over time it could build a following and I might do pretty well with it. Usually it takes years to make any sort of decent money blogging, it's definitely not a get rich quick scheme.

Get Paid to Read Email / Advertisements - There are sites online such as Inbox Dollars which will pay you to read emails. I've had an account there for several years now, and still haven't met the $30 minimum to get paid, and I have nearly 50 referrals! The problem is that you'll get an email every other day, and make 3 cents for each email you read. At that rate, it would take you over 5 years just to get your $30 payment! Don't bother.

Freelance Work - If you have special skills such as writing, programming, graphics, or other highly requested skills, there's a good chance that you will be able to find some work online. The problem is that you need to find people who need your skills online. There are a number of places that will connect freelance workers and people who have projects that need to get done, but often times you have to pay a fee to be apart of these. It's just part of doing the business. If you're going to be serious about freelancing, you can make some money doing it, but if you're just going to think about maybe doing a project some time, you're better off not quitting your day job.

eBay / Auction Sites - Some people have become very successful in eBay sales, but don't listen to the hype of the over-night cable shows and think you will get rich very quickly. There are already people on eBay in practically every niche market with years of experience that you don't have. They already have the best distributors and are selling things as low as they can. It seems as if it would be very easy to enter this market, but unless you have a great distributor and have found ways to cut costs below the competition, you probably won't get too far.

Quixtar, Amway and Other MLM Programs - Amway has been around for decades, and Quixtar is the latest reincarnation of the same program. These programs pay you to shop from their web-portal and refer other people to the program. There are a few people in the program who have done quite well but most people quit after a year, and never any make serious money in it. In order to do very well with these programs, you need to refer a lot of people. Most people don't have the salesmanship that it takes to convince their friends, family, coworkers, and strangers from the street to be in their down line.

Don't fall for the hype, there's nothing magic about the internet which makes it easier to make money with. You have to do all sorts of research, come up with a very solid business plan and have a very hard work ethic to even consider starting your own web-based entrepreneurial enterprise.

Before you can begin mastering your personal finances, you need to understand what personal finance is all about. First, it's personal - meaning it's about you and it's unique to your situation. Second, it's about finances - meaning it involves money. Personal finance is more than just paying off debt, picking your investments, and buying your first home. Those things alone will not achieve your goals. Personal finance requires you to define your goals and dreams and then to apply the ideas and behaviors required to reach those goals. It's all about managing your money with an end in mind - achieving your goals.

Identify Your Issues

You probably aren't reading this article just for the fun of it. There is a reason you are seeking personal financial advice. Maybe you never seem to have enough money to make it through the month - or week. Perhaps you just need to figure out how to prepare yourself for those unexpected emergencies. Or you could be just fine, but you'd like to polish your financial plan and accomplish goals you never thought possible. Whatever your reason, it's important to begin by identifying the obstacles that lie ahead. Here are some common financial problems:

Repeated Overspending - We have all experienced the temptation to buy more than we can afford at some time or another, but making a habit of overspending will quickly destroy any financial plan. Debts can easily become too much to handle and prevent you from ever reaching your true financial goals.

Emergencies - Your car breaks down, your paycheck comes late, or you forgot about that insurance bill that only comes twice a year. Financial emergencies can wreak havoc on the best laid plans. By not preparing for these emergencies, you are setting yourself up for future failure.

Procrastination - Who hasn't put something off until the last minute? We're all likely to do this sometime or another, especially with long-term goals that don't seem very urgent. But saving for retirement is a lot easier if you start early - even if you're only saving a little bit.

Emotional Decision-making - Financial decisions require prudent forethought and careful execution. By allowing our emotions to take over, we often make terrible financial mistakes. Those get-rich-quick schemes you see in infomercials late at night may seem like a good idea, but they're just another quick way to kiss your hard-earned money goodbye.

Personality Mismatches - Money & finances are one of the top reasons people get divorced. But how do you manage to create a financial plan when you are a saver but your spouse is a spender? By working together to create a solid basis for your personal finances, you and your spouse can utilize all your strengths to ensure financial success.

The Basics

Personal financial planning draws from aspects of finance, investments, insurance, law, employee benefits, and taxes. But you don't have to be an expert in all of these areas to reach your goals. Three basic rules will help you stay on track in your personal finances:

1. Money, income, and wealth are all different. Your financial situation doesn't depend solely on how much money you make - it really depends on how much money you keep. Personal finance focuses on the accumulation, preservation, and distribution of the money you keep - your wealth.

2. Be on your best behavior. All the nifty financial tricks in the world can't save you if you don't learn to control your spending, begin saving, and change your habits to achieve your goals.

3. It's an ongoing process. Managing your money requires more than creating a financial plan and following it for the next 10 years. It requires a lot more than just making sure you paid all your bills for the month. Personal finance demands that you are fully aware at all times of your responsibilities and actions - otherwise all your effort will be for naught.

Income Is Not as Important as You Might Think

If I told you I make $100,000 a year, you'd think that sounds pretty good, right? But what if I'm spending $150,000 every year? Doesn't sound so great now, huh? Income is important - but only to a certain extent. What's more important is what you do with that income and how much you keep at the end of the month. Your financial success depends much more on how you manage your expenses than the money you make on each paycheck.

Another important factor is your net worth. Your net worth is basically your assets (what you own) minus your liabilities (what you owe). Net worth is the real measure of financial wealth. You might live in a $300,000 home, but it doesn't mean much if you owe $270,000 to the bank for your mortgage. Take a minute and think about your net worth. Do you know what it is? Do you have any idea? Keeping track of this number helps you see where you are, where you came from, and where you are going.

What's Your Financial Type?

You may have heard of the Myers-Briggs Typology. To borrow from that system, think about how you would categorize your financial type. Are you aware or oblivious? Can you easily control your spending, or do you have problems? Are you committed to your financial goals, or do you lack follow-through because you haven't established firm goals yet? Are you an aggressive investor, or do you prefer to safely manage your risk by taking a more prudent route?

The answers to these questions can help you determine the make-up of your financial type. These questions can also help you realize the areas where you and your significant other may differ. Take the time to answer these questions honestly, and you'll soon find yourself on the path to a better understanding of your current financial behavior and what you may need to work on.

Your Habits Will Make You or Break You

The financial habits you adhere to will ultimately determine your success or failure. You can make all the plans in the world, but if you don't stick to them you'll never achieve your goals. Begin thinking about your current financial habits and ask yourself how you started those habits. Ask yourself if those are good habits - in that they will lead you to your goals. If you need to change your habits, what should you do instead and how will you make the change? Start today by thinking of a simple change you can make. Stick to that one little change for two weeks or four weeks and you'll soon find you can begin to make bigger changes. Eventually you will have all of your habits aligned with your goals, and you will be on the path to achieving your dreams.

Stay tuned for the rest of this Personal Finance series. We will cover net worth, financial math, budgeting, reducing debt, understanding credit, investing, insurance, taxes, education planning, retirement planning, estate planning, and other important topics along the way. In the meantime, you may visit Free Financial Plannerto get answers to your specific and unique financial questions.

First, I work online (publishing this article is working online).

Second, since you are reading this, then you probably are interested in how one makes money online or are trying to find a way to make yourself some extra cash.

And that leads me to point number three: there is only one online money making market that I have found that truly works, and maybe a handful or less of others that hardly make enough to look at twice. That market is freelance writing.

Making money online is very hard, and it isn't for everyone. If you don't have a lot of time to spend online, I don't suggest you even try it. That said, let me say that the only online way to make money that I have found that pays anything equivalent to the amount of time I put into it is freelance and article writing. Otherwise, I say forget it, unless you want to actually pay money out of your own pocket, buy a bunch of crap, or make pennies on the hour posting or clicking on ads (as if that could even be entertaining).

Other than freelance writing, SideTick is one of the few things that I use to make money online. I get on, read the stupid email they send me, go to the blog by the creator, read it, and post a comment, and make between fifty cents to a dollar every day. Is that a lot? Not at all, by most people's standards, but on the web, that is a considerable amount for the work I do. Does it pay the bills? Absolutely not. But it does add a little extra pocket cash.

There are a few others that are okay if you have a few spare moments and want a few spare pennies, such as BeRuby.com (see here), myLot if you like participating in forum discussions (I can make maybe fifty cents a day on that one if I try really hard, but it's hardly worth the time when I could spend that same amount of time writing articles and actually making legitimate money) - and well, that's it. That's all I can think of that doesn't involve a bunch of ads or surveys or paying money to get scammed.

Those aside, I still stand by freelance writing to make money online. There are quite a few handfuls of places to submit articles and job postings to compete for if you want to go that route, though there are only a few that I like to write for or feel are worth the time.

Personally, I think that any article site that only gives you page view money isn't worth the time. I've been writing for Associated Content for six months and have over fifty published articles, and I still make $3.00 in page views alone during a good month. If I didn't make upfront payments, I wouldn't make any money on AC.

There are other ways to make money online, but nothing is as legitimate or fun or worth my time as freelance writing is when it comes to online money making. And believe me, I've tried anything from PTC to social networking to anything in between.
