Making Money in Wotlk

Ryan Gavin and Dean Hachamovitch, Marketing Guy and Engineer, respectively, for Internet Explorer, have announced that the final build and release of Internet Explorer 9 will indeed be at the party they’re throwing at South by Southwest in Texas on March 14th, 2011. They’ve decided to first announce this to their very favorite community at Channel9, a bunch of developers who are in love with the internet platform, and they’ve spoken here in a video at length what the browser will be able to do.

This browser has been in production for approximately a year, and now they’re going to release it, thanking profusely the community of developers who have stepped up to help them in making this a platform that has a chance at competing with the rest of the powerhouse browsers out in the market today. As you know, Internet Explorer

Hachamovitch will be doing a keynote at MIX 10 as well, showing off how the platform is rolling out, as a sort of “look what we did in a year” sort of thing. These two fellas sitting on the couch are super excited about this rollout and after saying what they came to say, they made sure to prompt Channel9 for what they call an “uncomfortable question.” What Channel9 decided to ask about was HTML5, to which they reply “WE’RE FOR IT!”

Of course the developer community knows this already, so the question is pressed, beyond what HTML5 can do for the everyday user, what does IE9 offer the fringe users who want features that not everyone will use? Hachamovitch replies with a sort of well, we DO do that, we’ve implemented things like Navigation Timing which “got 0% usage on the web,” he then going on to say that they’ve added items that don’t just come from developers who request things, they’ve essentially come up with elements that they and people at Yahoo, Google, and etc have spoken about behind the scenes, bringing these “fringe” features into IE9 at launch.

Essentially what they’re speaking about in this video and what will be coming with Internet Explorer 9 is depth as well as quality implementation of features. We’re hoping for the best!

If you don't know much about Justin Bieber's rise to superstardom, James Parker provides a good primer:

How did he do it? With YouTube, that’s how. Kissed in his cradle by the witch of the Web, Justin was throwing up little promo reels by the time he was 12. Singing a Brian McKnight song into the bathroom mirror. Or sitting on some municipal steps somewhere, busking mightily about the Lord: “You’re my God and my Fa-ther!” he bellows through the legs of passersby, the wooden body of his guitar reverberating with his shouts. ...

Bieber wasn’t from the Disney factory, and he didn’t have a show on Nickelodeon, so the marketing plan was skewed toward his already established constituency in social media: lots of Facebooking and YouTubing and sugary tweets to his millions-strong Twitter army.

In February of 2007, 83.24 percent of users visiting TechCrunch did so from a Windows machine. One year later, in February 2008, the stranglehold remained firm at 80.44 percent. In February 2009, the number was at 74.04 percent. Last year, it was 61.59 percent. And this year? The number of people visiting our site from Windows machines dipped to 53.84 percent.

The writing is on the wall.

Look at those numbers again for a second. In four years, Windows share among TechCrunch readers has fallen 30 percentage points. That’s incredible.

The knee-jerk reaction in the comment section will likely be something like “it’s because you guys cover Apple so much”. But the fact of the matter is that Macintosh share, after rising for three of those four years, fell last year as well. It’s the mobile devices — specifically the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices — that are eating away at Windows.

In fact, if the trend over the past four years continues at about the same pace, in two years, devices made by Apple (Macs, iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads) will surpass devices that run Windows as the top visitors to TechCrunch. And depending on how popular the iPad 2, iPhone 5, and OS X Lion are, it could easily happen next year.

Here are the broken down numbers:

Feb 2007

  • Windows: 83.24%

  • Mac: 13.59%

  • Linux: 2.51%

Feb 2008

  • Windows: 80.44%

  • Mac: 15.15%

  • Linux: 2.97%

  • iPhone: 0.77%

  • iPod: 0.15%

Feb 2009

  • Windows: 74.04%

  • Mac: 20.48%

  • Linux: 3.01%

  • iPhone: 1.60%

  • iPod: 0.28%

  • Android: 0.09%

Feb 2010

  • Windows: 61.59%

  • Mac: 28.62%

  • iPhone: 4.07%

  • Linux: 3.49%

  • Android: 0.87%

  • iPod: 0.53%

Feb 2011

  • Windows: 53.84%

  • Mac: 27.64%

  • iPhone: 6.72%

  • iPad: 3.44%

  • Linux: 3.28%

  • Android: 3.06%

  • iPod: 0.62%

While even the last batch of stats shows that Windows still has a nice cushion over number two, Mac, if you add the Apple products put together, it’s a different story.

  • Feb 2007: 13.59% Apple products

  • Feb 2008: 16.07% Apple products

  • Feb 2009: 22.36% Apple products

  • Feb 2010: 33.22% Apple products

  • Feb 2011: 38.42% Apple products

In the four year span, Apple has added 25 percentage points to their share among TechCrunch readers. That nearly all of the 30 percentage points that Windows lost in that same span (Android’s growth pretty much fills in the rest).

So it currently stands at Microsoft’s 53.84 percent versus Apple’s 38.42 percent. Again, a big year for iPad, iPhone, and Mac could mean a changing of the guard as soon as next year. But unless something drastic changes, you can be sure that Apple will be dominant among TechCrunch readers in two years.

The latest rumors have Windows 8 showing up sometime in mid/late 2012. But the fact of the matter is that Windows 7, much more widely praised than the disaster that was Vista, hasn’t helped Microsoft buck this trend among our readers. Perhaps they’re only hope of gaining back share at this point is Windows Phone. So far, that hasn’t been going too well. Nokia should help that, but will it be enough to offset the Windows losses?

Humorously, Microsoft’s best hope for not falling to Apple may well be Android. If Google’s platform continues to make gains, it could prolong Apple passing Microsoft.

But again, Apple has iPhone 5, iPad 2, and OS X Lion on the immediate horizon — all within the next few months. And then there’s the very real possibility of another iPad in the fall.

The iPad 2 and iPhone 5 are likely to push the Apple share forward immediately. But don’t sleep on OS X Lion either. The early indications are that Apple has indeed made it much more iOS-like. That means millions of iPad/iPhone/iPod touch owners who have traditionally been PC users, are going to feel a lot more comfortable on a Mac than ever before.

And a new PC-to-Mac data migration system built in to Lion will only help that.

OS X Lion is going to feed off of iOS users, and vice versa. And the Mac ecosystem is going to continue to expand. Just as happened in the browser world with Chrome taking over, a transition is happening among TechCrunch readers in the ecosystem space. The numbers don’t lie. And Microsoft better pray that our readers aren’t leading indicators of overall trends in the space — which is exactly what you have been in the past.

Editor’s Note: Jim Dalrymple has been writing about Apple for more than 15 years. You can follow him on Twitter @jdalrymple and on his Web site at The Loop.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday introduced the iPad 2 at a special event in San Francisco, taking even more momentum away from its competitors.

I’ve had a lot of people in the last 24 hours tell me that the iPad 2 isn’t as revolutionary as the first generation device. Yes, that’s true. But not every device a company releases has to be or can be revolutionary.

Apple has released three revolutionary products in the last decade alone: iPod, iPhone and iPad. I really can’t think of any products from Apple’s competitors that fit in the revolutionary category in that same time period.

People also said that Apple wasn’t very forthcoming with the specs of the iPad 2. Again, that’s true, but there’s a good reason for that—nobody cares.

Well, some people care. Those of us who are geeks care about specs. However, have you ever noticed that when you sit with your non-geek friends and start listing off specs their eyes glaze over and they rest their chin in their hand.

That’s because they couldn’t care less.

The iPad 2 is no slouch either. It lost one-third of the thickness of the previous generation, and therefore it is one-third less than the size of the iPad competitors too. It also has new technologies like a gyro built-in that will launch another round of cool apps.

Yesterday’s iPad 2 announcement wasn’t about the geeks—it was about all the other people who will buy an iPad. What those people want to know is “what can I do with it?”

If it fits into their lifestyle, most people are good with that. Apple showed many ways how the iPad 2 can fit into your lifestyle.

From the very beginning, Apple was very smart with how it marketed the iPad. The first thing it did was get the device into businesses and promote the fact that it could be used to get work done. And it was quite successful with that.

In an analyst call in October 2010, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the iPad was already being used in 65 percent of Fortune 100 companies. That was four months ago and the iPad has grown since then, so we can only imagine where that number is now.

This strategy allowed Apple to do two things. If it came out with the iPad and pushed the gaming capabilities of the device, the business world would have looked at it as a toy. That would have certainly meant slower adoption. It also allowed them to work on some consumer software, two of which we saw yesterday.

In addition to the iPad 2, Jobs also unveiled iMovie and GarageBand for the iPad. This is what people want to know about—what can I do with the iPad that’s exciting and new.

Obviously, creating movies and being able to edit and share them with friends and family is a very popular thing to do these days. iMovie makes that easy.

Creating music, whether a novice or pro is also a cool thing to do. GarageBand is a great app to get that done and you can move your projects to your Mac and continue working on them.

It’s not just about the hardware. Apple delivers the whole experience that nobody else can. Jobs said yesterday that there are 65,000 apps on its App Store specifically designed for the iPad. That’s a lot of things you can do.

If you think Apple’s competitors are jumping for joy because the iPad 2 isn’t revolutionary, I believe you are wrong. I think they’re scared. Yesterday, they figured out Apple’s strategy too, but a little too late.

Preview of Final Result

Resources

  • PT Sans Bold – FontSquirrel

  • Free App Icons for Developers – WebAppers

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document that is 1200 x 1200 pixels, 72 dpi, and RGB Color. Fill the layer with white. (Ctrl+Backspace or Delete)

Step 2

Now create a rectangle for the header and fill it with a white-grey color, then use the colors on the image for the “Gradient Overlay”. Our search and logo will eventually be part of the header.

Step 3

Create a new rectangle above the previous one, with attributes as shown below. The following drop shadow effect creates a look of a 1 pixel stroke which does increase the look of that simple bar. Note: this step creates a horizontal line.

Step 4

Now add the “Gradient Overlay” layer style with the hex codes indicated.

Step 5

Add a white 1 pixel stroke. The following stroke of 1 pixel will divide the grey shadow effect. It’ll eventually work as a divider.

Step 6

Make one more rectangle in the middle-right zone, and fill it with white and add a 1 px stroke as indicated – it will be our search box.

Step 7

One more rectangle should be created and filled with blue. Set the inner shadow as indicated below, this will be our search button. This blue works great in combination with grey, white and light-grey. Blue will be the major contrasting color we use as we work through this template.

Step 8

Add the Gradient Overlay details to the button with the details from image.

Step 9

Add a 1 px stroke to the button with the color indicated. Take a look at the first and the final result of the button so you can see the difference all these details made.

Step 10

Now add this drop shadow effect for the text placed in the search box, using PT Sans Bold. This will be the final step in creating your search button. You may want to try other fonts, but the PT Sans Bold is really good for this small button.

Step 11

Make another fill under the header section, this will be the navigation area. Here we will place the navigation links of our template.

Step 12

Write your navigation links using a dark-grey color, then add a white “drop shadow” effect. The effect used for the navigation links is the same used for the search button.

Step 13

With 1px vertical line, make divisions between each links. The lines should be black and will really increase the beauty of the navigation area.

Step 14

Over the home section, make a fill with the blue and then add a Gradient Overlay style as indicated.

Step 15

Copy the Home link, this time color it white and add a drop shadow effect.

Step 16

Create a big, grey zone under the navigation, it should be about 30% of the layout. This will be the background for the featured area.

Step 17

Now create a big, white rectangle and add some shadow with the details shown. A big stock image, a big headline and some text with another great button will be added.

Step 18

Add a any dummy image you want to that featured area. Be sure it covers more than 80% of the area. The one I chose is from a stock website.

Step 19

Add some text to it, use the PT SANS Bold font and make the font big.

Step 20

The remaining area should be filled with grey, in it we’ll place some text. This is really a secondary area which describes the image, the services, the company itself, or whatever you’d like.

Step 21

Place some blue-colored text which will be the title of the information below. Use the details in the image for Drop Shadow style.

Step 22

Add some dummy text. This could be some important information or whatever you’d like.

Step 23

Create another grey area under the featured zone, where we will add some text and icons later. Add the details as stated on the image. Mostly, the icons will promote the services offered by the company behind the website.

Step 24

Continue by adding a Gradient Overlay style for the last rectangle we have created in the anterior steps.

Step 25

Now we are adding titles and icons, as well as some divisions. The icons can be found in the resource list at the beginning of the tutorial. Be sure to choose your icons and text thoughtfully.

Step 26

At the border of both zones, create a small circle and fill it with dark brown color. Add some inner shadow as stated on the image.

Step 27

Continue by adding a drop shadow layer style. It is another small detail, but it really makes that button zone minimalistic, nice-looking and well designed.

Step 28

To finish, add a Gradient Overlay effect.

Step 29

By using the Custom Shape Tool (U), create an arrow in both circles. Now add the details shown on the screenshot.

Step 30

Continue by adding some Color Overlay for the arrow. It should also be a blue color because otherwise, it will not fit the contrast and the colors used on the whole template.

Step 31

Add a video screenshot in the free space and place a title for it. For this template, I have used a simple screenshot of a YouTube widget.

Step 32

Add the text “Product Highlights” and “Case Studies.” Let the text under the “Product Highlights” be links so you could showcase some friends’ websites or resources you admire/promote.

Step 33

Finish it by creating another form for e-mails, place all kind of other information, and whatever you’d like.

Step 34

Don’t forget to make a relevant/small footer for our template. If you have paid attention, you should know how to create the same effect as below.

All done! If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to drop a comment. I hope you enjoyed this whole tutorial!

why internet marketing

"You misunderstand me. By 'establishing standards' [w]hat I mean [is] establishing positive standards. To do this, you must point out, not what you think is execrable, but what you think embodies or defines excellence. Otherwise, you don't sound like a critic, but like a curmudgeon."

(I contend that) Insightful criticism (so rare today) helps in establishing standards just as much when it is focused on a negative example (of whatever the artwork may be) as when focused on a positive example. So, I very much disagree that one "must point out, not what [he] think is execrable, but what [he) think embodies or defines excellence. Do you actually apply such a narrow prescriptive rule in practice? ---rejecting an otherwise insightful criticism simply because it has focused on a "bad case" and criticized it for its faults without also somewhere presenting a model example of "good work"? My approach is that I'll welcome any good, insightful criticism which leads me to better see and understand something of value--whether its focus is on a holding up for review and examination a "good" model or a "bad" work. I believe that a bad example is just as instructive as a good one (actually, in most ways, a bad example is far more instructive than a good one), that one can presume that a lesser work's faults, if avoided, help tend toward the production of a better work. In addition, your view seems to suggest that what critics should do is hold up examples for emulation so that others will be able to, well, emulate them and in that way avoid work of poorer quality. That's fine I guess if one's idea of the goal is to promote and encourage copyists, emulators, who are concerned first and foremost with following models.

We're talking about standards of taste here. That means helping educate and promote a better, finer practice of perception, of appreciation in the public generally---and that's as much needed among the so-called "elites" as the rest of us (a dichotomy to which, frankly, I don't subscribe). Elites aren't born, to the extent that they exist at all, they're made, formed, brought up through long practiced instruction. Anyone who's determined to do so can join such a course of development in his taste.

The most arresting high quality works to come , while springing from the same impulses and motives as earlier works of quality, won't necessarily outwardly resemble much if at all what was previously typical of the best work. So, how are people supposed to recognize it if the criticism they've studied had largely been devoted to the praising of models of the best current work?

In making an example of quality work the point is not to recommend to others to follow---as audiences or as artists---"other stuff like that" but to look for and recognize work which is drawn from the same springs in other artists, namely, their creative, and thus very personal and peculiar inner impulses to expression. Many fine artists may be obscure, but obscurity by itself is not necessarily indicative of quality work. However, in our culture, which is dominated to a crushing extent by an all-consuming commercialism, best-selling work is typically going to be work which is emulative, derivative, and which panders to a low, if not the lowest, common denominator; my view, however, is that this common-denominator, while it always exists, and exists "somewhere," is not fixed and immutable. It can rise or fall relatively, as people gain or lose generally in the quality of their perceptions and capacities to appreciate quality.

You assert that, "...the taste of most people has never been any better than it is now." ...

And I say that's rubbish. Either you're arguing that average taste is and must remain at some immutable level, never appreciably better or worse at one time than another or, otherwise, the upshot of your assertion is that we are today at what has to be seen as a "summit" in taste relative to the all times past. In either case, such a view strikes me a wildly absurd.

Browse the best-seller lists of the New York Times from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s and, into the 50s and compare what people (average readers, not Oxford and Cambridge professors of literature) were buying and reading with what is on the best-seller lists today.

Or, take another example: compare for literary quality, the Early Modern English Bible, particularly William Tyndale's landmark translation, on which the King James Bible is based--Bibles which were the daily reading (or listening)-matter of millions of English people with the most commonly read Bible today--The New International Version. The point in making the comparison is based on the fact that the Tyndale Bible, once it overcame authorityfs attempts to suppress it, and, later, the King James Bible, comprised the formative reading of their time. Even illiterate people were steeped and formed in it, in the rhythms, the vocabulary, the figures of speech--which remain in use today. Today, its analogue, the most widely-read English Bible is the New International Version. Compare them for literary quality and then please try and make the case that the taste of most people has never been any better than it is now. I notice that you're no more generous in examples than you assert I ought to be. You don't point out which of today's best-selling novelists compare favorably --or simply outshine--the acknowledged best-sellers of earlier decades.

Let's look particularly at the last thirty years of the 20th century:

for each year, we have the #1 best-seller:

Please remember: my case concerns "climate," not "weather." I don't deny that there are some "clunkers" to be found in each of the thirty-year lists, as well as the rare item of worth in the 1970s-1999 list; though, really, from the end of the 1960s the "drop-off" is truly dramatic. The bottom falls out of the "quality" field and we're given a list of the top-selling fiction which is truly miserable in its quality.

For better detail, look into the best-seller lists year by year, which give not only the single top-selling title of the year but the top ten best-selling titles in each year. While many are now long forgotten, I'll wager that many of these forgotten titles and authors put the near totality of today's best-sellers in the shade in terms of their quality. Of course some of them will be relatively poorer in quality; but, you've asserted that average tastes are simply static, immutable--a stupendous claim.

from 1940 alone we have, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Louis Bromfield and Christopher Morley--all of their works cited, best-sellers, at a time, mind you, when to reach that accolade, you had to sell huge numbers of copies, unlike today. What's a best-seller's minimum qualifying sales? Do you seriously suppose that anything like the sales of a best-seller today could have placed that title on the lists of the 1920s, 30s, 40s or 50s?

Others, best-sellers, from the 1940s, include

James Hilton, A.J. Cronin, Margaret Mitchell, Edna Ferber, Pearl Buck, Daphne DuMaurier, Somerset Maugham and Sinclair Lewis. Who have we got? John Grisham, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Tom Clancy, Stephenie Myer, for crying out loud!

regarding the best-seller, Twilight, by this author, it happens to be

"One of Publishers Weekly's "Best Children's Books of 2005;

One of School Library Journal's "Best Books of 2005";

...

"Initial reviews for Twilight were mostly positive, with Publishers Weekly called Meyer one of the most 'promising new authors of 2005'. The Times praised the book for capturing 'perfectly the teenage feeling of sexual tension and alienation', and Amazon.com hailed the book as '[d]eeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful'. Hillias J. Martin of School Library Journal stated, 'Realistic, subtle, succinct, and easy to follow, Twilight will have readers dying to sink their teeth into it', and Norah Piehl of TeenReads wrote, 'Twilight is a gripping blend of romance and horror'. Publishers Weekly's starred review described Bella's 'infatuation with outsider Edward', their risky relationship, and 'Edward's inner struggle' as a metaphor for sexual frustration accompanying adolescence. I intend to leave the following for a more detailed reply, but, till then, I'll confine my observation to pointing out that this misses the point---it's not so much what people could, or might find among the millions upon millions of resources buried somewhere on the internet, it's rather what they generally do find and stick on, and, in consequence, take as a model or guide. One is hard put to look for and find what one doesn't even imagine might exist in the first place.

I am arguing with someone who is failing to see that dreck has always been around; that the taste of most people has never been any better than it is now; that the internet merely makes ancient human tendencies more visible than they were previously.

But more than that, you are failing to see (or at least are being silent about) the power that the internet puts into the hands of proponents of the very cultural excellence that you are defending. That's why I brought up Conlon Nancarrow and Charles Ives earlier. Their music is getting a much larger audience now than it did before the internet. You no longer have to wait until the one copy of the scratched up cd down at the library becomes available. You can listen to it instantly. How is this bad?

As long as people like you talk of the internet as if it were nothing but tons of amateur crap, without ever mentioning the fact that it is also the best way of exposing yourself to cultural greatness; as long as you gripe about how many things suck without once providing a link to a single one of the millions of canonical public domain texts that you can download at the internet archive; as long as you fail to acknowledge that the web improves the communicative abilities of everyone, whether geniuses or idiots, I will continue to argue with you.

Sorry.

I argue with Mike all of the time too. I disagree with him about all kinds of things. But in this case, I share his optimism, perhaps because I remember how difficult it was to find interesting cultural artifacts before the internet. I used to read histories of music thinking 'boy, I sure would like to hear some of this music that I have been reading about; too bad I can't find any of it at my library or at any of the crappy local stores'. Music students today have access to so many more resources than I did that it boggles the mind.

And again, how is this bad?

An interested, motivated, curious reader could, or yes, might, find any number of fascinating things available on the internet. But the internet, in and of itself, and especially by its routine influence and use, not only won't encourage a person who isn't already that sort to become that sort of person, it will more likely tend to discourage one's becoming that sort of person.

On this day a year ago, Aten Design Group hosted a funeral for IE6 in Denver, Colorado. We heard about it and sent flowers. While the funeral gave a strong indication of the desire to rid the world of IE6, the browser still has a presence. So today, we bring you the next step in our mission to see IE6 gone for good. To demonstrate our commitment to getting rid of IE6, we’re launching a website called ie6countdown.com.

Now that it’s 2011, IE6 is officially a ten-year old browser. According to Net Applications, IE6 still has 12% share worldwide. Our goal is to get this share under 1% worldwide. Why 1%? We realize that there might not a magic number for when web developers and IT pros can drop support for older browsers, but we believe that 1% will allow more sites and IT pros worldwide to make IE6 a low-priority browser – meaning you don’t have to invest as much time in updates or fixes. We recognize that IE6 usage varies depending on where you live, so ie6countdown.com includes the details of IE6 share by country. We will update the site’s stats on a monthly basis and celebrate as countries dip under the 1% mark!

We know that many IE6 users are on the older browser because it’s at their workplace. We’ve put together some resources for IT pros to help understand the business value of moving off IE6 and are delivering to them the tools to help them navigate the process. And, with the assets provided on ie6countdown.com, we’re encouraging developers around the world to spread the word by placing an upgrade notification to IE6 users on their website. Top websites, like CNET, have already done this on their website, and other sites, like Meebo and MSN, are launching upgrade notifications soon.

We’re inviting everyone to share this site with friends, acquaintances, clients, and IT admins to see for themselves why even Microsoft thinks the world would be better off without IE6. Please join us in tracking the progress as we count down the market share of IE6.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, IE6 was a great browser for its time, but we all need the web to move forward. Visit ie6countdown.com today, and help us say farewell to IE6!

Thanks,

Roger Capriotti

What to anticipate When Getting a Roofing Contractors

When it comes time to correct or replace your homes roof, it can be a daunting job to locate somebody that is actually qualified for the job. There are lots of roofing companies out there, but the types who will do a great job for any sensible cost are not often easy to find. If you are in the marketplace for a service provider, use the tips below for meeting with as well as hiring the right one.

Interview as well as Consultation

Job interview by michaelab311

The majority of roofing companies provide totally free consultation services. This is especially important, because it gives them a chance to assess what your homes roof requirements, and it provides you with an opportunity to evaluate all of them. As with all of businesses, trust your intuition about the individuals you let upward onto your roof. No matter exactly how great the contractor's reputation or recommendation, he ought to begin by presenting you with a company card. If the contractor arrives searching as well as speaking in an unprofessional manner, most likely the task he is going to do may also be less than professional. This is not to say that you ought to anticipate companies to reach in fits. They is going to be climbing on your roofing, therefore most is going to be dressed in denim jeans as well as work boots or even sneakers. If the contractor appears to be more interested in speaking upon their cell phone during your roof than he is in evaluating your roof's needs, which may be an additional sign that he's not the one for the job. For your lawful protection, make sure that the actual contractor offers sufficient legal responsibility insurance coverage.

Roof Assessment

Merseyside Police BMW X5 Jaguar Xf S Demonstrator by Jon-999

Expect the service provider is going to be rising in your roof. Actually, any service provider who not need to increase on your roofing to judge the issue ought to be immediately reduced. Those who're seriously interested in their function may either create a sketching of the roof's surface area as well as mark trouble spots onto it because they go through their evaluation, or they will consider photos or even video clip from the surface while they're up there. This is an extremely essential step, since it allows you to observe exactly what the problems are and know how they will be set.

Estimate

Snowpocalypse 2011 by MeatFireGood

The next step will be the created estimate. The contractor will require out their calculator and come up with a written estimate. Some companies will go to their vehicle or even truck as well as write down the actual suggestion, while some will crisis the amounts to do the job in front of you. Once you are because of the suggestion, ensure that you understand exactly which items will be used, how long the job will take and if you will find any additional or hidden costs that may occur during the repair of the roof. The contractor should be able to solution all of these questions with ease and forewarn a person associated with a extra costs that might be sustained should the roof's integrity end up being broken inside.

Once you have received a few written estimates from roofers, evaluate what each organization or even contractor is willing to provide for the cost. Do not always discount the greatest bet, simply because sometimes the highest bet will actually be the service provider who does the job correctly. Additionally, be wary associated with prices for bids that are not nearly as expensive others. They might be utilizing inferior products or perhaps be unethical about the chance of hidden costs. Most importantly, trust your intuition and opt for the service provider that makes you feel most comfortable about giving over your money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

AFP

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Wikileaks and also the Uyghur

Henryk Szadziewski, Manager, Uyghur Human Rights Project

If it had been actually in doubt, information acquired by the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, offers verified Chinese language government fears over it's ongoing control of the location this calls Xinjiang, which is also known as East Turkestan. The leaked out wires through Ough.Utes. diplomats demonstrate the extent that Chinese language government bodies make an effort to convince government authorities worldwide to adopt it's position upon issues affecting Uyghurs. The actual cables additionally display the actual United States' issues as well as sights concerning the on going repressive measures in the region.

uyghur by sarvaz

The majority of lighting associated with Chinese language federal government pressure would be the wires pointing in order to Chinese anger, or even the specter associated with Chinese language ire, over the discharge of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to third countries. The December 29, 2008 cable television applies exactly how Chinese Assistant Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi fulfilled with the Ough.Utes. Ambassador to China in order to tone of voice Beijing's strong opposition of launch in order to any kind of nation apart from The far east, and that when the Ough.Utes. did indeed accede for this ask for it might "avoid harm to bilateral relations and to cooperation ‘in important areas'". In addition, the Feb '09 cable describes the way the Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the actual possible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfriendly act towards us" and a "slap within the face". The U.Utes. federal government stood firm in not really releasing the detainees in order to China demonstrates the actual degree of the politicized character from the Chinese judicial program. Genuine issues more than terrorism are easy to understand, however in the U.Utes. government's observe the detainees might probably face torture as well as delivery if they returned in order to The far east

Chinese language government pressure regarding the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not only put on the actual U.S. federal government, but also in order to Brand new Zealand and a number of European governments that were considering resettlement. Albania, Indonesia as well as Finland, in addition to Eu member says just about all appear to have borne the impact of Chinese language government disappointment. Regarding Germany, that was initially prepared to consider two Uyghurs on purely relief reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo cases were less better than additional detainees because of the negative effects taking Uyghurs might have upon relationships with The far east. The Might Eight, '09 cable television relates exactly how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer reported that Indonesia experienced knowledgeable China of the U.Utes. ask for to simply accept some Uighur detainees kept from Guantánamo and had been consequently warned by The far east of ‘a large burden upon bilateral relations' if Germany had been to accept any detainees".

The actual diplomatic wires also discuss the actual unrest in Urumchi, the local funds, in This summer '09. The This summer 13, 2009 cable discussing mass incidents within China states:

"Ethnic riots like those who work in Xinjiang July 5-7 and in Tibet within 03 associated with 08 differ substantially in origin and character from mass occurrences, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] upon XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both present severe trouble for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, however the Celebration management would not wait to open fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans when they deemed this necessary to restore purchase. Bulk occurrences present another type of risk, he explained, since the leadership is actually ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters with regard to fear of sparking massive public outrage that would change from the Celebration."

This can be a chilling viewpoint, especially when 1 views evidence presented in two reviews released this year through the Uyghur Individual Privileges Task (UHRP) as well as Amnesty Worldwide that detail eyewitness company accounts from the utilization of lethal live fireplace towards Uyghur protestors in This summer '09. In addition, the observation that fire would not be used towards Han Chinese protestors has resonances for that various approach taken by Chinese language protection causes in Urumchi to Han Chinese language direct orders in September '09. During individuals protests, after that Party Assistant, Wang Lequan, addressed protesters, who had demanded that he inform them regarding federal government reactions in order to security concerns. An identical request to satisfy with the Celebration Secretary by Uyghur demonstrators within This summer was not met.

The wider consequences of the unrest also noticed a short dialogue on the impact it would have on Iran-China relationships, and on relations along with Australia after Globe Uyghur Congress Leader, Microsoft. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke in the National Push Club within Canberra within July '09. In the latter situation, the Chinese government "privately warn[ed] a significant Aussie financial institution that sponsors the nation's Press Club to use it's impact to bar the Kadeer talk there".

The actual U . s . States' concerns about the situation within the Uyghur region are available through within the cables. In a discussion upon policy direction within Tibet, Ough.S. officials clarify that it will be not possible for Chinese frontrunners to adopt a much softer collection "if they look like doing so under international pressure". The cable dated 04 16, 2008, 30 days after the episode associated with unrest in Tibetan areas, also relayed the actual declaration "that household balance remains the leadership's top priority above all else, meaning there will ‘almost surely' be no relaxation of the present hard line on Tibet or in places such as Xinjiang." The info included in the cable additionally storage sheds gentle on the severe level of sensitivity with which the Chinese government sights territorial integrity, and the possible drip over of unrest through Tibet.

The prospect of solutions to stress in Tibet as well as Xinjiang arising from civil society are discussed inside a Feb Twenty-four, 2008 cable. Whilst suggesting that China's economic success increases its potential to deal with democratic change, the actual cable additionally talks about exactly how Chinese language frontrunners see the usefulness associated with "a limited expansion of municipal society, including improvements in the rule of law and a more powerful role with regard to authorized religions, NGOs, charities along with other stars within places that contribute to sociable balance and don't challenge Communist Celebration rule." This can be a significant alternation in thinking, which has seen Ough.Utes. authorities market the notion that Chinese language economic improvement, as well as economic relationships with China will bring in regards to a progressively democratic society; nevertheless, more belief seems to be put into the grassroots movement compared to one which starts from the best levels of the Chinese language federal government. Nevertheless, the cable television proves that "[i]n places such as Tibet and Xinjiang, driving a car associated with separatism leads to tighter limitations about the growth of municipal culture." This method can be regarded as counter-productive by the official, that shows that the U.S. government "should continue to express...serious concerns over Beijing's individual rights record and attract China's growing awareness which greater regard for human privileges, spiritual freedom and also the guideline of regulation will serve to advertise the very development as well as sociable stability which The far east seeks in addition to to improve China's worldwide picture." This type of strategy might take substantial diplomatic skills thinking about "China's paranoid concern the Usa privately encourages regime alter as well as ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The actual wires offer understanding of the every day company associated with diplomacy that's hardly ever owned by everyone, and it is interesting to notice the amount of work done behind closed doors on Uyghur problems. The importance of the role of the United States like a keep track of of Uyghur human privileges problems in personal discussions is made clear, and contrasts using its sensible open public stance. The staff from the Uyghur Human Privileges Project is comfortable with pressure china federal government exerts upon Uyghur activists; still, the facts associated with Chinese language federal government pressure on it's alternatives is actually illustrative from the degree which Chinese language officials attempt to suppress contradictory stories. With more facts to come through Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs may not get the head lines, but the cables have get rid of brand new light on the paperwork of individual rights conditions in the Uyghur area.

Whether it had been ever in doubt, information acquired by the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, offers confirmed Chinese federal government fears over it's ongoing charge of the location it phone calls Xinjiang, also is known as East Turkestan. The leaked cables from U.Utes. diplomats show the actual degree that Chinese language government bodies attempt to convince government authorities globally to adopt its position upon issues impacting Uyghurs. The actual wires additionally show the actual U . s . States' concerns as well as views regarding the on going repressive steps in the region.

Most illuminating of Chinese language government stress would be the wires directed in order to Chinese language anger, or the specter associated with Chinese language ire, within the discharge of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to 3rd nations. A December Twenty nine, 08 cable television applies exactly how Chinese Assistant International Minister Liu Jieyi met using the Ough.Utes. Ambassador to The far east in order to voice Beijing's powerful competitors associated with release in order to any kind of country other than China, and that if the U.Utes. did indeed accede for this ask for it might "avoid injury to bilateral relations and to cooperation ‘in important areas'". In addition, the February '09 cable explains the way the Chinese language Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the actual possible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable act towards us" and a "slap in the face". The Ough.Utes. government stood company within not really releasing the detainees in order to China demonstrates the degree of the politicized nature from the Chinese language judicial system. Legitimate concerns over terrorism are easy to understand, however in the Ough.S. government's view the detainees would most likely encounter torture as well as execution if they came back to The far east

Chinese language government pressure regarding the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not only put on the actual Ough.S. government, but also in order to New Zealand and a number of Western government authorities that were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Germany and Finland, as well as European Union member states just about all have the symptoms of paid for the impact associated with Chinese government unhappiness. In the case of Germany, that was at first willing to consider 2 Uyghurs on solely humanitarian grounds, Uyghur Guantánamo instances had been less better than other detainees due to the unwanted effects accepting Uyghurs might have upon relations along with China. The May 8, 2009 cable television relates exactly how "German Ambassador Michael Schaefer documented which Indonesia had informed The far east from the Ough.S. request to accept a few Uighur detainees held from Guantánamo coupled with been subsequently warned by China associated with ‘a large burden upon bilateral relations' in the event that Indonesia had been to simply accept any detainees".

The diplomatic wires also discuss the actual unrest in Urumchi, the local funds, within This summer 2009. The July Thirteen, '09 cable television talking about mass incidents within The far east states:

"Ethnic riots like those in Xinjiang July 5-7 as well as in Tibet in 03 associated with 08 vary substantially in source as well as character through bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each present serious problems for the actual Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, but the Celebration leadership would not wait to spread out fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans if they considered this necessary to recover purchase. Mass occurrences pose another kind of threat, he said, as the management is ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters with regard to anxiety about sparking huge public outrage that will change against the Party."

This is a relaxing opinion, especially when 1 considers the evidence presented by 50 percent reviews released this year through the Uyghur Human Privileges Task (UHRP) and Amnesty Worldwide which detail eyewitness company accounts from the use of deadly reside fire against Uyghur protestors within This summer 2009. Additionally, the actual declaration that fireplace wouldn't be deployed against Han Chinese language protestors has resonances for that different strategy taken through Chinese language security forces within Urumchi in order to Han Chinese protests within Sept '09. During those protests, then Celebration Assistant, Wang Lequan, tackled protesters, who had required he inform them regarding federal government responses in order to security concerns. An identical ask for to satisfy using the Celebration Assistant through Uyghur protesters within July wasn't fulfilled.

The actual broader repercussions from the unrest also saw a short dialogue on the impact it might have on Iran-China relationships, as well as on relationships along with Australia following Globe Uyghur Our elected representatives President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, talked at the National Press Club in Canberra in August '09. In the latter situation, china federal government "privately warn[ed] a significant Aussie bank that vendors the nation's Press Club to make use of it's influence to bar a Kadeer speech there".

The actual United States' issues about the scenario in the Uyghur region are available via in the cables. In a discussion on policy direction in Tibet, U.S. authorities explain that it'll end up being impossible with regard to Chinese frontrunners to consider a much softer line "if they appear like doing so below worldwide pressure". The cable television dated 04 16, 2008, 30 days after the episode associated with unrest within Tibetan areas, also relayed the declaration "that domestic balance remains the leadership's top priority most of all, meaning there will ‘almost surely' end up being no rest from the present hard line on Tibet or in locations like Xinjiang." The info contained in the cable additionally sheds light about the severe sensitivity that china federal government sights territorial ethics, and the feasible drip more than of unrest through Tibet.

The chance of methods to stress in Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of civil culture are debated inside a Feb 24, 2008 cable. While recommending which China's financial success increases it's potential to deal with democratic change, the actual cable additionally talks about how Chinese leaders begin to see the effectiveness of "a restricted expansion associated with civil society, including enhancements in the guideline of regulation and a stronger role with regard to approved religions, NGOs, charities along with other actors in areas that bring about sociable balance and do not challenge Communist Celebration rule." This can be a notable change in thinking, which has seen Ough.S. authorities promote the notion that Chinese economic improvement, as well as financial relations along with The far east will bring about a progressively democratic culture; however, much more belief appears to be put into the grassroots movement compared to one which starts in the top levels of the Chinese language federal government. Nevertheless, the cable television proves which "[i]n places for example Tibet as well as Xinjiang, driving a car associated with separatism leads to tighter limitations about the development of civil society." This approach is viewed as counter-productive through the official, who suggests that the actual Ough.S. government "should continue to express...serious concerns over Beijing's human privileges record and appeal to China's growing awareness that greater respect with regard to human rights, religious freedom and the rule of law will serve to promote the development and sociable balance which China looks for in addition to to enhance China's international picture." This type of strategy might take substantial diplomatic abilities considering "China's weird fear that the United States secretly encourages routine alter as well as ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang".

The cables offer understanding of the daily company associated with diplomacy that's rarely afforded to everyone, which is interesting to notice the amount of function carried out behind closed doors upon Uyghur problems. The significance of the actual role of the United States like a keep track of associated with Uyghur individual privileges conditions within private discussions is created obvious, as well as contrasts using its sensible public position. The staff from the Uyghur Human Rights Project is well aware of pressure the Chinese government exerts upon Uyghur activists; still, the facts associated with Chinese federal government stress upon its alternatives is actually illustrative from the diploma that Chinese officials attempt to suppress contradictory narratives. With more revelations to come through Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs may not get the headlines, but the cables have get rid of new light on the documentation of human rights problems in the Uyghur area.
